Compared to the earlier Tejas Mk1, the Mk1A comes with advanced avionics, an AESA radar, modern electronic warfare suite, mid-air refueling capability, reduced radar cross-section, and compatibility with a wide range of Indian and foreign weapons. HAL Tejas Mk1A Orders and Deliveries

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the primary operator of the Tejas Mk1A.

  • 2016 Order: 40 Tejas Mk1 (IOC & FOC variants) – already inducted and operational at Sulur Air Base, Tamil Nadu.

  • 2021 Order: 83 Tejas Mk1A (73 fighters + 10 trainers) worth ₹48,000 crore (USD 6.5 billion). Deliveries started in 2024 and will continue until 2031.

  • Future Prospects: The IAF has shown interest in 97 more Tejas Mk1A aircraft. If approved, the total strength could exceed 180 fighters, making it the largest indigenous fighter induction in Indian history.

This expansion ensures that HAL can deliver on the Indian Air Force’s large Mk1A order and Indicated that it has capacity to deliver to foreign buyers.
